TYPES OF GRASS MOST COMMON IN OUR AREA
(North Georgia, Metro Atlanta area)
The following list are the grasses we most commonly use in our area. Please remember there are always mico-climates which will challenge the list for what does well and where.
1. BERMUDA (TIFT 419) is a warm season grass, which means it is green in the summer and does it's most active growing during the spring and summer. It is inevitable that we experience drought conditions every now and then, and the good news is Bermuda can handle the stress by going dormant (and turns brown) during periods of drought and will recover. Bermuda is easily maintained with minimal effort. It is happiest in full sun but will perform well in at least 6 hours of sun. Usually Bermuda Tiftway 419 is the least expensive grass to purchase.
2. FESCUE is a cool season grass, which means it stays green in the winter and does it's most active growing in the fall, and spring. Fescue can handle a fair amount of shade. It can become high maintenance in the summer due to water requirements, which in turn sets it up for more fungus issues. Fescue is usually cut and installed during the fall, winter and early spring. Once the heat of summer hits in Georgia it is not recommended to install it as the roots will have a difficult time establishing.
4. CENTIPEDE is a warm season grass (green in summer, brown in fall). It resents cold weather but will perform well in some Georgia micro climates. It can be difficult to maintain though it does require less mowing because it does not grow as fast as bermuda grass. It is flat grass in the lawn.
5. ST. AUGUSTINE is a warm season grass(green in summer, brown in winter). It does not like cold and we do not gaurentee for our northern locactions (north of I-20). It has a very nice wide blade.

4. EMERALD ZOYSIA is another warm season grass (green in summer, brown in winter. It is shade tolerant, needing at least 6 hours of sun daily. It greens up faster than Jamur in the spring time. It does have a reputation for thatch issues, which can be handled through good maintenance practices. Emerald Zoysia is a beautiful lawn grass.
